Trains are an environmentally friendly form of transportation. However, they still use a lot of energy. With the help of EKE-Trainnet® technology and internal process improvements, saving energy is possible and profitable. EKE-Electronics is developing a new concept "Eco-Drive" to help operate the train fleet more efficiently in terms of energy consumption.
There are several ways to improve the energy effiency of the train: 1. Central control of energy consuming functions: E.g. when the train comes to end station, the driver can centrally switch off the lights and air-conditioning of the train, thus cutting down energy consumption.
2. Supporting the driver to drive energy-efficiently. It is quite easy to learn economical driving when trained by professionals. However, this training has typically short effects if not supported by means of consumption monitoring readable by the driver. With an optimized driving style, adapted to track profile, schedule and location, energy savings of 15-20% are possible. 3. Early diagnostic data on critical subsystems to facilitate preventive service. If e.g. air-conditioning system compressors have a fault, repairing them earlier saves energy.
